Level 1 & 2 Surf Instructor Courses

At the Outer Reef Surf Instructor Academy, we run ISA Endorsed surf instructor courses in places we genuinely know and love. The International Surfing Association (ISA) is the world governing body for surfing, and its instructor pathway sets a recognised global standard for coaching and water safety. That means when you qualify through the ISA route, you’re gaining a certification that’s respected internationally and gives you the credibility to work with surf schools and clients around the world.
We deliver ISA Level 1 and Level 2 Surf Instructor qualifications (with optional judging and specialist pathways, including adaptive surf instruction) in real surf environments, with a big focus on practical coaching, strong safety foundations and time in the water doing the job for real. Because we train across multiple destinations, we understand what it takes to coach in different conditions and cultures, and we can help you choose the location and course format that suits you best. We also support graduates with guidance and work placement help after successful completion, drawing on our experience working with surf schools internationally and training teams in the locations we operate.
Our courses are open to people at all stages, whether you’re taking a gap year, travelling long-term, or building a professional career in surf instruction.
2026 spaces are limited. We offer payment plans and can help you find work at the end of your training. If this feels like your next step, drop a comment or send us a DM and we’ll share details & dates and help you every step of the way.
Not quite sure your surf level is there yet? That’s completely normal. You can choose a one-week intensive, or take more time with 4, 8 or 12-week programmes that give you space to progress your surfing, refine your teaching skills and build confidence step by step. Training is available across the UK and Europe (including Wales, France, Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands) as well as destinations like Morocco, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, so you can qualify in a place that fits your goals and leave ready to teach with confidence wherever you go next.

Yes! All of our Courses and packages include FREE wetsuit hire.

Let us know what dress size or jumper you wear
I HAVE MY OWN WETSUIT, CAN I WEAR IT?
Of course you can! If you only have a shortie or are unsure if it still fits you (don't worry it happens!), let us know what size you are anyway and we can bring you a suit just in case.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING FOR MY ACTIVITIES?

- A beach towel
- Some flip flops or shoes to walk over the pebbles (if needed)
- Any medication you may need (eg. Asthma inhaler)
- Warm clothes to change into afterwards
- A big smile and a sense of adventure
SUP: For ease, we recommend using one of ours. They are all top of the range O’shea, Jobe and Finla boards.
Surf: If you have your own board you are more than welcome to use it but we do recommend one of our Foam boards as they really help when you are learning
The beauty of watersports is that anyone can give them a go! We have taken people on the water from every walk of life imaginable. All we ask is that you can swim at least 25m unaided as this is for your safety.
I HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION, CAN I STILL COME?
Yes, in most cases you can absolutely still come along to our weekends. All of our instructors take ‘rescue bags’ out on the water with them so any medications can go into this bag for the duration of the activities. If you would like to discuss this with us further, please drop us an email and a member of the team will contact you.
DO I NEED TO BE A STRONG SWIMMER?
We do ask that you can swim at least 400m unaided in 8 minutes inorder to join us on any one of our instructor courses
We use various accommodation providers across the globe depending on the season and location. Please feel free to get in touch.
Your accommodation will be well signposted with Outer Reef signage for your arrival and you can check in. The following day your team of instructors for the week will meet you just inside your accommodation at 9am for a meet & greet.
Our accommodation providers meals so you can make your own lunches we recommend packed lunches or you can buy lunch at the beach venue.
IS THERE SOMEWHERE TO SHOWER OR CHANGE AT THE ACTIVITY LOCATIONS?
Our locations do not have changing facilities so we recommend wearing your swimming costume under your clothes. Tenby North beach has a cold water public shower that is free to use. All other locations do not have shower facilities. We recommend bringing a towel robe or Dry Robe to change after your session.
All of our locations have toilet facilities.
IS THERE ANYWHERE I CAN LEAVE MY BELONGINGS WHEN WE ARE ON THE WATER?
Yes! You can leave your car keys etc in our vans or our lock ups (depending on the location). Outer Reef does not take responsibility for any items left and we do have limited space so please don’t bring your diamond jewellery and massive overnight bags!
