choose between two bases

Accommodation

You can choose from two accommodation styles, depending on how you want your week to feel. If you love being in the middle of it all, the beachfront base is the social heart of the camp, with easy access to the water, laid-back communal spaces, and that classic surf-trip rhythm where everything happens in one place. If you prefer a little more calm, the apartment-style option gives you extra space and a quieter night’s sleep, while still keeping you fully connected to the camp experience. Either way, your surf programme stays the same, the transport is organised for you, and you can dip into the social side as much or as little as you like, knowing you have a comfortable base to come back to after each session.

the main hub

  • Private single room

  • Private double room (priced per person)

  • Private triple room (priced per person)

great value, great for groups

Quieter Apartment Base

This option suits travellers who want a calmer place to sleep, or groups who like having shared living space. The setup is apartment-style: one apartment per floor, with three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, plus living space and kitchen facilities.

Key points:

  • Close to the beach (about a short walk), and set just outside the busiest part of town

  • The beach camp is still your main hub for sessions and social time, with transport included so you can spend your days at the beachfront base and simply head back to the apartment to sleep

WHAT’S WAITING FOR YOU AT OUR SURF CAMP

This is the kind of place where you settle in fast. Days start with an easy breakfast, then you head to the best wave option for the conditions, with coaching or guiding that keeps things calm, practical, and confidence-led. Back at camp, it is all about the good kind of downtime: pool time, shaded spaces to chill, rooftop sunsets, and a social atmosphere that is there when you want it but never forced.

The camp works well for first-timers to Sri Lanka because everything is wrapped into one clear weekly flow. You have structured surf across the week, equipment provided during sessions, and transport handled when you are heading to a different spot. Accommodation is flexible too: choose the beachfront hub if you like being where everything happens, or go for the quieter apartment-style option if you want more space and a calmer night’s sleep, while still joining all the surf, food, and camp life.

You come here for progression, but you leave with more than that: warm ocean days, simple routines, and that “I could stay another week” feeling.

Good To know

About Our Camp

Surf Coaching & Guiding at Weligama Beach Front surf camps, Sri Lanka

In Weligama, surf progression comes from one big advantage: lots of repeatable waves in a forgiving environment. The main bay offers mellow, sandy-bottom peaks that let you practise the same skills again and again, which is exactly how things start to click. Sessions are built around the conditions on the day, choosing the best section for your level, and keeping the coaching calm, practical and confidence-led so you leave each surf knowing what you are improving next.

How The Surf Sessions Work

Coaching runs Monday to Friday, with timings set around the tide, wind and the groups on the day. There are no lessons on Saturdays or Sundays, which gives you space to rest, explore the coast, or book an extra guided surf if you want more water time.

You will be grouped into one of 5 coaching levels (Level 1 to Level 5). In Weligama, that matters because the bay has different take-off zones and wave speeds, and the coaches can place you where you get the most waves without feeling rushed or in the way. Groups stay sensible, and if a level is busy, extra groups are created so sessions remain manageable.

If your surfing moves quickly (or you realise you are in the wrong group), you can switch groups during the week. That flexibility works especially well here because the learning curve is often fast once you get used to timing and positioning in the bay.

The Surf Coaches & Guides

The coaching team keeps it supportive and straightforward. If you are brand new, sessions stay focused on safe foundations and building real comfort in the water. If you are improving, coaching shifts toward wave choice, reading sections, and getting you out of “just standing up” mode and into surfing along the face with control.

Group ratios aim for a small-group feel so you get actual feedback rather than just a push into waves. The camp setup describes very small instructor-to-surfer ratios for lessons and guiding, so coaching stays personal while still keeping the week social.

Progression & Support

Progression follows the 5-level pathway, but the coaching in Weligama is very “wave repetition” focused. You start with the basics done properly, then build into cleaner take-offs, better trim and positioning, then down-the-line surfing and turns. Once those are consistent, the focus shifts to choosing better peaks, linking manoeuvres, and exploring nearby reefs and points when conditions suit.

Equipment

You can bring your own surfboard if you want, but the camp has a range available so you can match the board to your level and the feel of the waves on the day. In Weligama, having the right volume makes a big difference, especially for beginners and improvers trying to maximise wave count and confidence.

For your kit bag, think tropical surf basics: a long-sleeve rash vest or lycra, high SPF sunscreen, zinc for face and lips, and mosquito spray for evenings. A pair of ear plugs can be useful if you surf a lot, and it is worth packing a small first-aid set for the usual reef cuts and fin nicks if you head to spots outside the bay.

BEGINNER SURFER

Beginners usually sit in Level 1 (Beginner) or Level 2 (Beginner Plus), and Weligama is ideal for this because the sandy-bottom peaks let you focus on timing without the stress of a heavy take-off. Expect a confidence-first approach: safe pop-up habits, better paddling and positioning, and simple goals that stack quickly because you will get plenty of waves.

INTERMEDIATE SURFER

Most intermediates land in Level 3 (Intermediate) or Level 4 (Intermediate Plus). Here the main goal is consistency: choosing better peaks, reading sections earlier, trimming with control and turning your rides into something repeatable. The coaching is about moving beyond “occasional good waves” and getting you surfing with purpose on most waves you catch.

ADVANCED SURFER

Advanced surfers are Level 5. The week becomes more performance-led and conditions-led: finding the best windows outside the main bay, getting on higher quality waves, and focusing on speed, positioning and cleaner manoeuvres. Coaching stays simple but specific, keeping you reliable in shifting winds and tides while pushing your surfing forward.
