About Our Camp

Surf Coaching & Guiding at Alentejo, Portugal Surf Camp

Surfing in Alentejo is shaped by open beaches, consistent Atlantic swell and space to learn without pressure. Our surf coaching is designed to be flexible and supportive, allowing you to choose how intensively you want to surf while progressing at a steady, comfortable pace. Sessions combine time in the water with theory, helping build confidence and understanding alongside practical skills.

How The Surf Sessions Work

Surf sessions are delivered as part of structured courses, with lessons running for 2 hours and including both water time and theory. Group sessions are planned around conditions and ability, ensuring lessons remain safe, enjoyable and productive.

Depending on the course you choose and your check in day, sessions are spread across your stay to allow time for rest, reflection and progression. Lessons are adapted daily to suit conditions and group needs.

Course options include:

  • Short Course with 3 group lessons for Saturday arrivals or 2 group lessons for Wednesday arrivals
  • Basic Course with 5 group lessons across the week
  • Intensive Course with 7 group lessons, available during low season and on request in high season
  • Private lessons available on request, subject to surf team availability

The Surf Coaches & Guides

Surf sessions at Outer Reef Surf Camp Alentejo are led by a team that knows this stretch of coastline well and understands how the conditions change from day to day. Instruction is practical and down to earth, with an emphasis on making sense of the ocean rather than overloading you with technique.

Throughout the week, coaches stay closely involved, adjusting sessions to the conditions, the group and your individual progress. Support extends beyond the water, helping you build confidence and awareness so each session feels purposeful and enjoyable.

Progression & Support

Progression is built through repetition, understanding and confidence rather than pressure. Surf theory sessions support learning by helping you understand ocean conditions, wave behaviour and positioning, while practical feedback in the water allows you to apply this knowledge directly.

Whether you are surfing for the first time or looking to improve consistency and technique, coaching is adapted to your level and goals, with time to practise and progress naturally.

Equipment

Surf equipment is selected to suit Alentejo’s beach break conditions and the needs of different ability levels. Boards are provided during surf lessons, allowing you to focus on learning and progression without worrying about logistics.

For guests who want additional time in the water outside of lessons, access to surf equipment is included as part of the camp experience.

BEGINNER SURFER

This level is ideal if you are new to surfing or want to build strong foundations in a relaxed environment. Alentejo’s wide sandy beaches and open space make it easier to learn without pressure. Coaching focuses on surf safety, understanding the beach environment and learning the basics of paddling, standing up and balancing on the board, with the aim of feeling comfortable and confident in the ocean.

INTERMEDIATE SURFER

Level 1 suits surfers who already have some experience and feel comfortable catching waves in white water. Coaching helps develop better timing, positioning and wave selection, while building confidence as conditions change. This level supports surfers in becoming more consistent and starting to surf unbroken waves with greater control.

ADVANCED SURFER

Level 2 is designed for confident surfers with solid board control who want to refine technique and surf with more intention. Coaching focuses on reading the ocean, positioning in the line up and adapting to Alentejo’s Atlantic conditions. This level is ideal if you are looking to improve flow, confidence and consistency on open beach breaks.
