Outer Reef Complete Guide To Surfing In Morocco

Morocco is one of the best winter sun surf trips for UK and European surfers. When the North Atlantic starts sending consistent swell, the Atlantic coastline lights up with a mix of right hand points, reefs and user friendly beach breaks, so you can nearly always find a wave that suits your level.

The main surf season runs through the cooler months, when swell is more reliable and the classic point break days around Taghazout and the surrounding coast can be properly special. In spring and summer the waves are often smaller and more manageable, which is ideal for beginners and improvers, especially if you focus on early sessions before the wind picks up.

Morocco is also the kind of surf trip that feels like a proper adventure beyond the water. Between surfs you can eat ridiculously well, reset in a hammam, explore souks and old towns, or escape inland for mountain scenery and natural pools. Think tagines, couscous, fresh grilled fish, warm bread, and mint tea on repeat.

Whenever you choose to come, Outer Reef will help you match your trip to the best conditions for your level, and build a Morocco itinerary that balances surf, culture and downtime.

Agadir Coast

Taghazout Bay (Taghazout, Tamraght, Aourir)

Morocco’s most famous surf zone, packed with pointbreaks and beaches within a short drive. A brilliant base for mixed levels because you can usually find something working, from gentle beginner bays to faster, more powerful waves on the right swell.

North of Taghazout

Imi Ouaddar and the Tamri Coast

A quieter stretch of coastline with a more laid back feel and plenty of space. Great if you want consistent surf options without the busiest lineups, plus easy access to different beaches depending on wind and swell.

Atlantic Icons

Imsouane Bay

Home to long, running right hand rides when it is on, plus a second bay and nearby options that can suit different levels. A great choice for improvers who want lots of wave time, longboards, and a slower rhythm between sessions.

City Base

Agadir and Anza

Agadir makes logistics simple with plenty of amenities, and the nearby beaches give you solid options for lessons and progression days. Ideal if you want surf plus easy transport, restaurants, and a more city meets coast vibe.

Culture Coast

Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki

A proper Morocco add on with an iconic medina, creative energy and great food. It can be windier here, so timing and spot choice matters, but it is perfect for surf plus culture, especially if you want a day trip or a couple of nights away from the main surf hub.

Northern Atlantic

Rabat Coast (Rabat to Kenitra and Mehdia)

Northern Morocco has a different feel: more local line ups, long beaches and a strong Atlantic pulse, with surf spots close to the capital. It is a great option if you want to mix surfing with city time in Rabat, or add a north coast leg to a longer Morocco trip.

When To Visit Morocco

It's an incredible Country and well worth a visit any time of the year

Best Time To Visit Morocco

You can surf Morocco year-round, the coast simply shifts with the seasons. The main surf season runs from autumn through spring (roughly September to April), when consistent Atlantic swells light up the points and beach breaks along the Taghazout and Agadir coastline. This is when Morocco is at its best, offering long, peeling waves and reliable conditions for all levels.

Through late spring and summer (roughly May to August), swell becomes lighter and conditions are more relaxed, making it a great time for beginners, improvers, and those looking for fun, manageable waves. With fewer crowds, warm weather, and the option to move between spots depending on wind and tides, there is always a wave to be found if you stay flexible.

November- April in Indonesia

You can surf Morocco year-round, the coastline simply shifts with the seasons. During the wetter months, the west coast works best early in the morning, offering clean, playful waves before the winds pick up. As conditions change, the east-facing breaks can really turn on, delivering pumping, well-shaped waves that are perfect for learning and progression.

March - September

Super good for beginners and the hottest time of year

Things to do between surfs

Between surfs, it is easy to add a different side of Morocco without losing the laid back surf rhythm. Dip into local life with a souk and old town wander, street food stops, and a few gifts for home. When your arms need a break, swap saltwater for an inland reset with a Paradise Valley day trip, mountain scenery, and natural pools.

Evenings are made for eating your way along the coast, think tagine, couscous, fresh grilled fish, warm bread, olives and salads, finished with mint tea. If you want to feel good for back to back surf days, book a traditional hammam or a massage to loosen up, sleep better, and paddle out fresher.

For an easy rest day mission, head to Essaouira for ocean views, a beautiful old town, and a proper coastal vibe. And if you are turning the trip into a bigger adventure, add an overnight desert experience, camel ride at sunset, dinner around the fire, then sleep under the stars in a desert camp before heading back to the coast.
