Outer Reef Madagascar Surf Resort

OPEN YEARLY FROM APRIL 1st - SEPTEMBER 31st
Group bookings only (5 pax min / 10 pax max)

Outer Reef is bringing you an unforgettable surf adventure in the remote south-west of Madagascar, one of the last true frontiers of surfing. This exclusive getaway sits on the northern edge of Befasy, a quiet beach village reached by a scenic boat journey from Toliara, known locally as the City of the Sun.

Your stay gives you direct access to a private stretch of coastline and a selection of world-class waves breaking on the outer reef, just a short boat ride from the resort. The set-up caters for developing surfers through to high-performance athletes looking for perfect, uncrowded conditions.

At the heart of the resort is a spacious communal restaurant, bar and relaxation area, set high on a hill with sweeping 360-degree views of the ocean, the bush and the surrounding reef breaks. It’s the ideal place to unwind, dine and enjoy the slower pace of island life.

When you’re not surfing, the area offers a wide range of activities including kiteboarding, spearfishing, fishing, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkelling, traditional pirogue sailing, yoga, beach walks and time to simply enjoy having the whole resort to yourselves.

For those wanting complete privacy, the resort is offered exclusively to groups. Bookings are available for groups of 5 to 10 people, giving you total access to your own remote surf paradise.

WEATHER

This is the driest region of Madagascar. Tulear with an average of 36cm (14”in) rainfall makes it the junction between a tropical west coast and the desert south. The southern regions (Vezo, Antandroy) show a bushy kind of vegetation, with spiny desert and unique flora varieties: baobab-like plants, thickets, euphorbias, didiereaceas, aloes and bottle trees. The dry season lasts 9 months from March to Nov and even during summer. Ifaty is rather shrubby with grassy savannahs, palm trees and tamarind trees fed by muddy rivers in the estuaries, deltas and mangroves. During winter, air temps hover around 28°C (82°F), while the water temps rarely dip below 23ºC (75ºF), but take a shorty for windy days.

THE NATURE

Madagascar is world famous for its unique and incredibly diverse nature, main highlights being Lemurs and Baobab Trees.

A visit to Tsimanampetsotse National Park can be arranged by car from our Resort. Lemurs generally a siting plus old Baobab trees, caves and a large lake.

Quad bike trips to a larger Baobab forest and other excursions can be arranged from Anakao area.

WHEN TO GO

Low pressure systems moving east, away from South Africa pump swell up and along the Mozambique Channel. SW-facing reefs will receive up to 12ft (4m) surf but most of the quality surf will have to wrap around the NW-facing reefs so SE trades can blow fully offshore. From April to September, expect regular swells producing 4-12ft (1.2-4m).

Unlike the rest of Madagascar, the tide factor rises in the Mozambique Channel and can reach 6ft (2m) on spring tides, which is enough to bring the live coral close to the surface and cause slow navigation at low tide in the lagoon.

Yes, in most cases you can absolutely still come along to our weekends. All of our instructors take ‘rescue bags’ out on the water with them so any medications can go into this bag for the duration of the activities. If you would like to discuss this with us further, please drop us an email and a member of the team will contact you.
